The formation of the Manitoba Association of Black Social Workers (MABSW) represents both a timely and necessary step toward advancing equity, representation, and collective empowerment within the social work profession and the communities we serve.

Across Manitoba, conversations about anti-Black racism, inclusion, and systemic inequities have highlighted the importance of meaningful action and intentional change. Representation matters. When Black children, youth, individuals, and families see Black social workers advocating for their well-being and navigating systems alongside them, they experience greater opportunities for connection, trust, and culturally responsive support. When individuals engage with professionals who understand their lived experiences culturally, academically, and through shared community realities—they are more likely to experience safety, belonging, and empowerment.

MABSW was established as a space for connection, growth, advocacy, and collective advancement.

Strengthen the visibility, voice, and leadership of Black social workers within Manitoba’s social services sector.

Support the well-being of Black communities through culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive social work practice.

Build partnerships and collaborate with individuals, organizations, institutions, and communities that share a commitment to justice, inclusion, and community empowerment.

MABSW honors the history, contributions, and resilience of Black social workers while creating a future grounded in connection, advocacy, leadership, and meaningful change.
