MABSW Land Acknowledgment

The Manitoba Association of Black Social Workers r (MABSW) espectfully acknowledges that we live, work, and gather on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anishininiwak, Dakota Oyate, Denesuline, and Nehethowuk Nations, and
on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We also recognize that Inuit have longstanding connections to the lands and waters of northern Manitoba.

We recognize that these lands have sustained Indigenous Peoples for countless generations and continue to hold deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance. We express our gratitude to the First Peoples who have cared for these territories since time immemorial and who continue to uphold their responsibilities to the land, water, and future generations.
As an association of Black social workers committed to justice and liberation, we acknowledge that the systems shaping our society—including the social work profession—have too often contributed to the displacement, marginalization, and oppression of Indigenous Peoples. We recognize that reconciliation requires more than acknowledgement; it calls for honest reflection, accountability, and meaningful action.

We are committed to building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities that are grounded in listening, reciprocity, and mutual respect. We honour Indigenous rights, sovereignty, knowledge, and self-determination, and we recognize the importance of Indigenous leadership in shaping a more just and equitable future.

The Manitoba Association of Black Social Workers also recognizes the shared and interconnected impacts of colonialism and anti-Black racism. We believe that advancing equity requires solidarity across communities while respecting the distinct histories, experiences, and rights of Indigenous Peoples.

May this acknowledgement remind us that our work must be guided by humility, courage, and a commitment to dismantling systems of oppression. Together, we strive to create spaces where justice, healing, dignity, and belonging are realities for all.
